Coconut Chicken with Thai Curry and Basil

It's rare for me to say this, but the dish might actually have been better without the meat. The eggplant by itself was cooked down so it was tender and just melts in your mouth with abundant flavor.

The chicken might have complemented or starred in the dish had it it been seasoned or marinaded beforehand because it seemed bland relative to the eggplant.

Use a half tablespoon instead of a full one of the curry paste that the recipe calls for if you don't like it very spicy.

Hilarious Google Voicemail Experience

So I got a Google voicemail today in Chinese (Cantonese) and it tried to provide a transcript. Of course I don't expect it to work for non-english languages, but it was funny to compare the transcript to the audio.

Transcript:

"Bye bye the the top already Hi mister, Martin from bundle Peter on hi year. Bye bye."

Breast Cancer Walk and Donations

This year I have signed up to walk in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and I’m hoping you’ll support me. I know that there are a lot of breast cancer events out there, but Making Strides speaks to me because funds raised enable the American Cancer Society to help people stay well and get well from breast cancer, find cures, and empower people to fight back today. With your help, we can save lives.
They say that every donation makes a difference, and it really is true. I know that times are tighter than normal for many of us, but if you can spare even $5, it truly will make a difference. If everyone walking in Making Strides this year were able to raise just $5 more, we would raise an additional $3 million to fight breast cancer. Imagine what an incredible difference we could make together!
To support me in my efforts, please visit my personal page. If you’re going to be in town, I’d love for you to join my team and walk with me. If not, please support my efforts with a donation of whatever amount you can spare.
As a little extra inspiration, I thought you might like to know a few of the ways your donation will help the American Cancer Society save lives every day:

  • More people in our community will have the information and tools they need to help prevent breast cancer or find it early.
  • More people with breast cancer will have a place to turn around the clock to help them through every step of their cancer journey whether it’s a free ride to treatment, a place to stay, or just talking to someone who has "been there."
  • More progress will be made toward finding breast cancer’s causes and cures. The American Cancer Society has played a role in nearly every major breast cancer breakthrough of the last century, which have led to the discovery of lifesaving breast cancer treatments like Tamoxifen and Herceptin. You will help us find more.
  • More women like our own mothers, daughters, sisters, and grandmothers will have access to lifesaving mammograms and treatment they need.
Each of us has our own reasons for caring about the fight against breast cancer … whatever your reasons, I hope you’ll choose to make a difference by signing up to walk with me or making a donation online to support my effort. I’m so grateful to have great people like you in my life who care about breast cancer! Together we will make a difference, make history, and make strides.

101 Ways to eat cheaper

Just read this article by Ron about lowering your food costs. It's a pretty good list. I exercise many items on the list, but not on a regular basis, but the ones that I do most frequently are:

- Shop at a local farmer's market
- Buy the store brands
- Dine out responsibly
- Brown bag your lunch
- Check the per unit price on everything
- Cook in bulk

Some tips not on the list that I use:

- Tailor your meals/menu based on sale items at the grocery store
- Try to usually order water when dining out
- Save half your meal from dining out for another meal (particular dinner time when serving sizes usually are double)

1 dollar does make me holla!

I took advantage of a great deal for restaurant gift certificates. I paid $1 for $25 GCs which is 90% off discount off the usual $10 for $25 GCs.
It's to celebrate 9-9-09 for 99 hours (not sure why other than it's a cool numbered date)
All you do is go to restaurant.com and use the code "NINETY" to get the discount when you checkout. Once you buy them, you don't have to wait for anything in the mail. You can just print out your certificates. Most, if not all, GCs expire after 1 year after date of issue.
However, most GCs have fine print and qualifications such as minimum purchase amounts or excluding alcohol and dining must be on certain days. Make sure you read that before purchasing...but at $1, you can't really go wrong. For GCs with big minimum purchase, I figure I just get a couple friends together and we can all save. It's a great way to try out new restaurants too.
I ended up paying $5.00 for five $25 giftcards to the following restaurants in the KC area:
  • Jazz, A Louisiana Kitchen
  • Tatsu's French Restaurant
  • Ari's Greek Restaurant
  • Pierpont's Union Station
  • Teocali
